High Stakes Poker: Four Players Felted

Опубликовал admin | Комментарии (0)

It was a veritable bloodbath on Sunday’s episode of the GSN cash game franchise “High Stakes Poker.” Four players went broke to the tune of $200,000 and next week, a new crop of players will take to the felts.

Fresh off last week’s $1 million vegetarian prop bet between Phil Ivey and Tom “durrrr” Dwan, the action was hot and heavy on Sunday night. With less than $50,000 in his stack, PokerStars pro Daniel Negreanu shoved all-in over the top of a raise by Eli Elezra with K-Q of spades. Negreanu told Elezra that he’d show a card and let Elezra pick which one to turn over. Elezra selected the queen and then allowed Negreanu to see one of his own hole cards. Negreanu picked Elezra’s eight and Elezra made the call. The duo agreed to run it twice.

The first board ran out 5-6-9-4-2, giving Elezra the flopped nut straight and a win of half of the $99,000 pot. The second board ran out 6-10-Q-9-K and, despite hitting two pair, Negreanu once again ran into a straight. Elezra scooped the entire pot, prompting “High Stakes Poker” host Gabe Kaplan to lament, “The Daniel Negreanu saga on ‘High Stakes Poker’ continues.” Negreanu bought back in for another $200,000.

Then, Italian poker sensation Dario Minieri got it all-in for $159,000 against Dwan on a flop of 2-10-3 holding K-3 of hearts. Dwan insta-called Minieri’s push with K-10 for top pair and for the first time on the sixth season of “High Stakes Poker,” the board was run four times. Although Minieri was even money to win one-quarter of the pot, Dwan took down all four boards and scooped $344,400. Kaplan explained, “Dario’s impulsive moves were fun to watch, but finally got him in trouble at the end.” Minieri exited stage right.

The fireworks continued when Full Tilt Poker pro Gus Hansen moved all-in on a flop of 7-2-5 with pocket queens. Negreanu, who was the original pre-flop raiser, called with 7-5 for top two pair and two more boards were run. Negreanu tasted victory in both and raked in the $397,200 pot, effectively putting him back to even despite his earlier loss to Elezra. The hand crippled Hansen’s stack to just $17,500 and he went broke one hand later. Hansen re-bought for $200,000.

Unabomber Poker namesake Phil Laak then joined the carnage and witnessed Jason Mercier become the fourth player to go broke on Sunday’s episode of “High Stakes Poker.” Mercier led out for $28,700 in a flop of 2-3-7 with A-4 and Ivey made it $78,700 with pocket nines. Mercier sheepishly announced that he was all-in for $185,100 and Ivey contemplated a call. Kaplan critiqued, “I don’t see how Ivey can call. If [Mercier] had aces or kings, he’d play it the same way.”

Nevertheless, after an extended deliberation, Ivey called. The board was only run once and Ivey collected $425,200. Mercier and Hansen both departed, leaving the table six-handed. Ivey sat with over $1 million in front of him, up $500,000, and Kaplan observed that he could pay off his vegetarian prop bet with Dwan right now: “He could have a whole barbeque if he wants.”

Despite four players being felted, the largest pot of the night had yet to occur. On a flop of 10-Q-K with two diamonds, Dwan fired out a continuation bet of $45,800 with 9-8. Ivey made the call with A-6 of diamonds and the turn was the three of spades. Dwan fired out another bullet, this time $123,200, and Ivey called. The river was a blank. Dwan bet $268,200 with a busted straight draw and Ivey asked for a count. The decorated poker pro commented, “This is going to be the sickest call of all-time.” Dwan stared intently at the pot and gulped, but Ivey laid it down. Dwan raked in the $676,900 pot, the largest of Season 6, as the credits rolled.

This Sunday on “High Stakes Poker,” a new cast of characters joins the table, including Dennis Phillips, Patrik Antonius, and Barry Greenstein. New episodes of “High Stakes Poker” air at 8:00pm ET on Sundays on GSN.

Poker Players Alliance Focusing Efforts on State Level

Опубликовал admin | Комментарии (0)

To open the 2010 calendar year, officials from the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) have largely focused their energies on the state level, including Florida, California, Alaska, and Delaware.

With momentum on Capitol Hill largely riding on the shoulders of Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA), the Chairman of the powerful House Financial Services Committee, the PPA has gradually turned towards the movement to legalize and regulate online poker at the state level. In Florida, calls for legalized intrastate online poker have been building, leading PPA Executive Director John Pappas to testify in front of the Florida Senate Regulated Industries Committee in February.

Despite the seemingly positive introduction of intrastate internet gambling legislation, the PPA has been cautious about throwing its full weight behind any bill. In an update to PPA members sent recently, the organization explained its skepticism: “Florida is contemplating a single-source provider of online poker, i.e. one poker website. PPA is concerned that the lack of competition and consumer choice could also negatively impact the player experience.”

Pappas told Poker News Daily that building an online poker site from the ground up is far from an easy endeavor: “The idea that they’ll be able to maintain liquidity is a bit of a fallacy, particularly if it’s going to be limited to one operator. Players will be bored with one site and they currently like the ability to play on multiple sites. My pitch has been to look at what’s going on at the federal level.” On Capitol Hill, Frank’s HR 2267, the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act, allows multiple internet gambling sites to solicit U.S. customers.

In Delaware and Pennsylvania, legislation has been passed in 2010 introducing and expanding table games, including poker. As you might expect, the PPA has been wholly enthusiastic about both developments, commenting, “The PPA welcomes this as a first step in advancing opportunities for poker players to play games of skill such as Texas Hold’em in a licensed and regulated atmosphere.” Table games will likely debut in the middle of 2010 and according to the Allentown Morning Call newspaper, the Sands Corporation has set a target rollout date of July 1st.

In Alaska, a unique battle is brewing as to whether charity poker tournaments are permitted under state law. PPA Alaska State Director Rich Markgraf has reportedly sent a letter to government officials seeking clarification of the legality of charity events. The PPA dubbed the Alaskan stance against charity tournaments a “misguided notion.”

In early February, Pappas testified in front of the California Senate Governmental Organization Committee arguing for increased competition in any proposal legalizing intrastate online poker. Pappas explained to Poker News Daily, “We believe in a competitive marketplace, one that favors everyone who wants to get into the marketplace.” However, increased momentum at the state level for legalized internet gambling could pay dividends on a national level. 2010 is an election year, leading many in the industry to question whether legalizing internet gambling will even be addressed.

In its monthly update, the PPA was quick to point out that online poker players helped raise more than $1.5 million for victims of the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12th. Major online poker sites matched player donations dollar-for-dollar, resulting in a $1.5 million haul for charity. PPA Chairman Alfonse D’Amato applauded the efforts of many in the community in the organization’s mailer: “Like the rest of the world, the poker community is eager to do anything it can to aid Haiti in the wake of the devastating earthquake. I applaud PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Cake Poker for providing poker players across the globe an easy way to make a contribution.”

Daniel Negreanu Offers Phil Hellmuth 800-1 Odds to Win WSOP Players Championship

Опубликовал admin | Комментарии (0)

Daniel Negreanu is always among the first in line to provoke poker brat Phil Hellmuth. The PokerStars Team Pro took another hearty shot at Hellmuth this week at the World Poker Tour Bay 101 Shooting Star event in San Jose, California, making Hellmuth a rather humorous offer for the upcoming World Series of Poker (WSOP) Players Championship.

The two poker superstars were seated at the same table during Day 2 of the event when the topic of the $50,000 Player’s Championship at this year’s World Series of Poker came up. The event, which will replace the $50,000 HORSE event that was introduced in 2006, will feature the same games as HORSE plus No-Limit Hold’em, Pot-Limit Hold’em, and 2-7 Triple Draw. Negreanu told Hellmuth he’s probably an 800-1 favorite to win the event, which instigated a heated discussion between the two players. Suddenly talks of a serious prop bet were in motion.

During a break in play at Bay 101, Tournament Director Matt Savage spoke with Negreanu about the bet: “In mixed games, obviously he doesn’t spend a lot of time on it and he’s not very good at a lot of the Limit games,” said Negreanu. “So I was needling him, because that’s what we do, so I said ‘you’re about 800-1 to win that event.’ So now he wants me to book action on 800-1.”

Negreanu expects there to be around 150 players in the inaugural Players Championship. He admitted that the original offer was just to get a rise out of Hellmuth, but a bet will likely be in place before the WSOP kicks off in May. “Laying 800-1 is no fun on anything,” Negreanu told Savage. “So instead I told him I’d lay him a price on a crossbook. He’s down to 250-1… so now we’re getting close.”

Savage also spoke with Hellmuth regarding the prop bet, and in typical fashion Hellmuth outlined a lengthy explanation for his side. “At 800-1 I like my father (to win),” joked Hellmuth. “You could pick an internet player off the rail who you could teach for a year and he’s probably 800-1. I haven’t played a lot of those games but recently I’ve been playing a ton of mixed games on the internet and it’s been helping my game a ton. Right now I’m trying to improve and get better at every game because the Hold’em tournaments are so deep that I think it’s more difficult these days.”

Hellmuth never cashed in the brief four-year history of the $50,000 HORSE Championship at the WSOP. Each of his 11 bracelets came in Hold’em games, but he has reached final tables in HORSE, Pot Limit Omaha, Omaha Hi/Lo, and Seven-Card Stud events. Last year, the $50,000 HORSE Championship attracted only 94 players as the event was taken off the ESPN televised lineup. David Bach was crowned champion, beating John Hanson heads up to collect the $1,276,802 first-place prize and the Chip Reese Memorial Trophy. Other previous winners were Scotty Nguyen, Freddy Deeb, and Chip Reese.

The Players Championship wager talks have likely been put on hold as Hellmuth prepares for the final table of the WPT Bay 101 event on Friday. Hellmuth, who held the overall chip lead going into Day 3, will enter the final day second in chips behind Andy “BKiCe” Seth. Hellmuth is playing for his first ever WPT title as well as the $878,000 top prize.

Poker Players Stunned by EPT Berlin Robbery

Опубликовал admin | Комментарии (0)

As reported yesterday, up to six armed gunmen robbed the Grand Hyatt Hotel’s casino during the PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) stop at Berlin. While nobody was seriously hurt, the incident caused havoc, as the thieves made away with a portion of the EPT High-Roller tournament prize money.

PokerStars, the official sponsor of the EPT, released an update about the incident on Sunday: “Yesterday at approximately 2:15pm (local time), an armed robbery took place at the European Poker Tour (EPT) event in Berlin. Nobody was seriously injured. Four armed men were involved in the robbery, which targeted the tournament registration desk outside the tournament area.”

The poker site added, “No shots were fired and the suspects quickly fled after a security guard intervened. The police investigation so far has shown that the suspects had a handgun and a machete. Contrary to tabloid reports, no Kalashnikov assault rifles or hand grenades were used. The suspects did not enter the tournament area and the money taken was substantially less than what has been reported.”

After the terror on the scene settled, players were asked to continue play only a few hours later, including the 20 remaining players in the EPT Berlin Main Event. One of the competitors was American pro Kevin “ImaLuckSac” MacPhee, who commented about the incident on PocketFives.com. “I honestly thought we should have stopped play,” said MacPhee, who eventually reached the final table as the chip leader of the Main Event. “It was a pretty freaky thing to have happen, especially considering the poor planning of the tournament area… no exits, lots of panic, stampeding, screaming, crying.

“The EPTLive.com people shut down because of it, but we somehow were expected to play on,” MacPhee continued. “I thought it was a little unfair to put that upon the players after something like that happens, especially without any player input on how to handle the situation.”

EPTLive was broadcasting the Main Event as the hotel was robbed and caught footage of the panic in the tournament area. Mickey Dinsen Peterson, a professional poker player known as “mement mori” online, was among the dozens of people in the poker room when the break-in occurred. “I sat at one of the outer tables and all of a sudden 10 people came storming into the poker room with more following all heading for the exit screaming something about robbery and bombs,” explained Peterson on the TwoPlusTwo forum. “At this point, there is an absolute panic where everyone is pushing you towards the exit and even though we can’t see any robbers, they could enter the room at any second for all we knew.”

The robbery not only terrified those playing the EPT event in Berlin. News broke quickly across the world and players were eager to share their thoughts and prayers via Twitter and other social networks. Here’s a sample of the reaction:

Shaun Deeb: “Wow EPT Berlin got robbed by 6 armed gunman they got close to a mil in euros glad I didn’t go to this one.”

Bodog pro Evelyn Ng: “OMG!! ARMED ROBBERY at EPT Berlin, 6 gunmen take off with $1M in highroller buyins.”

Jon “pokertrip” Friedberg: “Wish I was at EPT during the heist!!! Woulda been a great experience! Glad nobody got hurt.”

Jeff “YellowSub” Williams: “Ept Berlin raided by armed robbers, hope everyone is ok.”

Stay tuned to Poker News Daily for the latest updates on the robbery at EPT Berlin.

They easily surpassed that mark though, drawing 557 players and bringing the total number of runners in Berlin to 945. [...]
